Remember that crunchy wonderful sweet but tart texture of a fresh apple right off the tree? You pick it, rub it a bit on your shirt to get off some of the dirt, and it’s so juicy and wonderful you could eat four of them.
The season to go apple picking is here, and there are so many opportunities out there to make incredible pies, sauces, and of course just have the best apples around to eat by hand.
Why Pick Apples?
Getting Out and Supporting Your Local Farmer
Grabbing the family to go apple picking is a great day out. There’s nothing that beats heading out on a beautiful afternoon with a basket, and bringing home bags of apples you gathered yourself.
Pack a picnic, make a day of it, and talk to your kids about the importance of local farms, the land, and your community. There is something wonderful about getting the chance to visit and give money to a local farm when you can.
Inexpensive Time Together
Picking apples is a fun thing to do outside that doesn’t need to cost a lot of money, and provides some great exercise and time together. You can make games around who can get the “most perfect apples,” or talk about the trees and nature.
You are literally exercising while picking your own groceries!
Connecting to your Food
Getting connected to where your food comes from is important. If you can, whether or not you have kids with you try to get some time with the owner or workers on the farm, and talk about the process of growing the apples, what it takes, and how the apple season progresses. It really makes you appreciate the work and attention that goes into something we often take for granted.
Anticipating the Harvest
Talk about the great things you’re going to be able to do with all of these apples, and get everyone excited to bring in the harvest!
There are so many options that apples provide. Some people swear that canning them makes a delicious cooked apple side dish to a winter meal, others love making pies or sauce, and still others love dipping slices of raw apples into peanut butter for a snack.
Apples are so versatile, and almost anyone you talk to has a strong opinion on what is the best use of one.
